The Bedroom Philosopher’s High School Assembly

As part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2012

The Bedroom Philosopher teams up with The Age’s Ben Pobjie to deliver a High School Assembly supershow – a one hour timewarp back to the awkwardest concert ever staged. The Bedroom Philosopher will be exorcising his pubescent demons via the mythical school of Croxton High. Near the bottom of the my school tables, they’ll be displaying their skills at poetry, music and the highest art form of all – rock eisteddfod.

The Bedroom Philosopher’s High School Assembly was staged last year at a sold out Thornbury Theatre. Carrying on from Songs From The 86 Tram, Justin Heazlewood portrayed a range of characters, including poetry nerd Nigel Gay, Raw Comedy finalist Cameron Alessi and a blind student in a baffling recreation of Lionel Ritchie’s Hello video. He’ll be backed by an ensemble cast including Ben Pobjie as Principal Farquar, Poet Laureate Telia Nevile and Sex On Toast as school band The Housecats.

The Bedroom Philosopher has had a stellar year already, supporting the Dresden Dolls on a sold out national tour in January. In February he released his first book The Bedroom Philosopher Diaries, a collection of tour tales.

“Other would-be comedy/musical acts should note: The Croxton high class of 2011 final exam results are in, and its distinctions all round people; time to pull your socks up.”

The Bedroom Philosopher will celebrate the launch of his first book with a literary knees up and danceathon at Trades Hall February 17

The Bedroom Philosopher Diaries is a hilarious and melancholic collection of tour reports and musings from the past five years as a touring folkstar. The book has already earned high praise from Neil Gaiman, Benjamin Law & Tony Martin.

The knees-up will feature:
Justin Heazlewood in conversation with himself
Readings by Dave Graney & Damian Cowell (DC3)
Indie male burlesque with Tom Doig
New songs from The Bedroom Philosopher
PBS’s Emma Peel & California Soulman DJing until late.
Dapper MC Michael Nolan
Pathos!

The Bedroom Philosopher Diaries details his epic battles with drunk punters, scatty rockstars, aloof groupies and mostly – himself. These tell-all tales allow exclusive access to the depths of the performer psyche – Boho Stripped Bare. Each entry grooves with BP’s trademark wordplay, Gen-Y commentary and commitment to emotional honesty. Under the glare of the stage lights he explores the ungainly labyrinth of his alter-ego and the puzzling mechanics of the Australian entertainment scene. There are touching scenes of male affection between his band The Awkwardstra and Shakespearean duels between hipster and bogan subcultures. Tickets to the launch are available from here.

The book is being published through A Small Press and is available in selected bookstores and via bedroomphilosopher.com and nibblesmusic.com

It’s been a productive year for Beddy Phil with the release of Northcote (YouTube Comments) single, where the Internet trolls get their time in the sun. In late March he will premiere The Bedroom Philosopher’s High School Assembly at The Forum for Melbourne Comedy Festival. This secondary school supershow stages the assembly of mythical Croxton High School. It includes Ben Pobjie as Principal Farquar and The Bedroom Philosopher as Nigel Smythe.

“Justin Heazlewood handed Amanda Palmer a copy of The Tour Diaries when we were in Melbourne, but it was on my side of the bed, and I was the one that got to read it. It was what all the great rock and roll touring books would have been like, if the people who wrote them had been honest to the point of embarrassment, had a clear, self-deprecating sense of humour and had real problems with veggieburgers and plastic razors. And instead of nonstop saturnalia of groupies and rock songs, there were attempted gigs on trams and occasional unimpressed girls who won’t even kiss you.”
Neil Gaiman

THE DC3 PAY TRIBUTE TO THE DC3!
PLUS ROOT! COMEBACK SHOW! PLUS SPECIAL GUESTS!
At The Sando in Newtown on the 25th February.

What’s all this? The DC3 paying tribute to THEMSELVES?? Supported by THEMSELVES??

That’s right folks. It’s a major milestone in the career of The DC3, celebrating ONE YEAR IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS!

After a successful celebration in Melbourne, The DC3 are now commemorating this occasion in a gala performance at their Sydney home, The Sando.

And to help them celebrate, ROOT! will be reforming (again) for a one-show only comeback!

Unbelievable! The DC3 celebrating their one year anniversary. It’s been a thrilling journey. In that time The DC3 have undergone massive changes, yet kept their freshness in a career that has seen them:

· Go electric at the Newport Folk Festival
· Perform in front of a world record 65,000 fans at Shea Stadium
· Invent hip hop with the groundbreaking ‘The Message’
· Die in a plane crash
· Release ‘Justin Bieber’s Christmas Album’

And now, The DC3 will bring their latest bewildering ‘installation’ to The Sando.
Supported by a performance, in their cowboy-hatted splendor, of the fully reformed line-up of ROOT!

Speaking about their comeback, here’s the final word from ROOT! front man DC Root:

‘It’s been 18 months… a lot of water under the bridge. A lot of life experience. We’ve all had families… breakdowns… addictions… we resisted the many offers to do a comeback tour, but finally, when we heard that Powderfinger weren’t using the Lear Jet… the time seemed right.’

‘Mind you… we’re not sure about playing with The DC3. We’ve heard they’re cunts.’

Supported by ROOT!.
With guest appearances from: Asher Treleaven, The Bedroom Philosopher and more:
February 3rd 2012:

THE DC3 PLAY WITH THEMSELVES.
… AND THE BEDROOM PHILOSOPHER.
AND ASHER TRELEAVEN.
AND THIS SEX IS ON CHOIR
AND OLIVE GREY…
AT THE REGAL BALLROOM ON THE 3RD FEB

Comeback tours…

Remember when The Eagles said ‘it’ll happen when hell freezes over’?
Remember when Joy Division’s Ian Curtis said ‘over my dead body’?
Remember when ROOT!’s Damian Cowell said: ‘When Liz Hurley roots Shane Warne’?

In a deeply cynical move, the members of ROOT! have been coaxed out of retirement for a figure reported to be in the vicinity of two figures, as part of a star-studded roster of guests commemorating the one year anniversary of The DC3.

That’s right. The DC3 – Damian Cowell, Doug Lee Robertson and Henri Grawe, will be supporting THEMSELVES at Melbourne’s newest, most salubrious entertainment venue, the Regal Ballroom, reforming the country rock combo that first brought them together in 2007 before they split up – acrimoniously, of course – and reformed, a week later, as The DC3.

The DC3 play with themselves to commemorate ONE YEAR in the music industry – an incredible achievement, you’ll surely agree. And as part of this night of tribute to their longevity, they’ll be joined by cameo appearances from The Bedroom Philosopher, Asher Treleaven, This Sex Is On Choir and Olive Grey who will all be paying tribute to The DC3.

Like the Queen’s Christmas message, it’s a regal occasion. In a regal location.

Christmas has never been so dodgy with The Bedroom Philosopher’s A Very Beddy Christmas EP. The single, 12 Days Of Christmas features a gagtastic video that’s been described as “Pissweak World meets David Lynch,” and features cameos by comics Dave Callan, Asher Treleaven and The Suitcase Royale. The video was directed by Carlo Zeccola who recently worked on ABC’s The Slap. The EP and video will be launched at a Tuesday residency in December at the Northcote Social Club.

A Christmas single was always going to be risky, (it ended The Darkness), but Beddy Phil was bent on reinventing these yuletide classics as twisted jingles of social commentary. 12 Days of Christmas may well be the great Australian parody, showing the fallout when the True Love turns crazed ex who still can’t stop mailing shit. Five golden rings become “Five mouldy things,” three French hens turn into “three French hit men” and a partridge in a pear tree becomes “a cartridge from a 303.” Genius, no?

The EP features the new Bedroom Philosopher tune Presents, a smokinly off-beat ode to gifts that evokes Moldy Peaches and the jazz-folk of 70’s Sesame Street. Backing it up is a plethora of Christmas parodies including Little Drummer Boy (bogan rock style), Deck The Halls (Deck The Kids) and Jingle Bells (Jingle Hell). These tracks feature the Beddy Christmas Choir made up of Melbourne groups The Nymphs and Men In Suits (Spooky Men’s Chorale).

The December residency will feature a different support choir each week including the RMIT Occasional Chorale, Choir Straits and Monash University Chorale. He’ll be backed by his red-hot band The Awkwardstra, unveiling the world premiere of Jazz Santa. Next year The Bedroom Philosopher is set to reprise his wildly successful High School Assembly show at Melbourne Comedy Festival. He’s also been announced as the main support for the Dresdon Dolls national tour in January.

The DC3 will release their debut album The Future Sound of Nostalgia on September 1. The album will contain the single I Was The Guy In TISM and live favourite Henry Fucking Wagons.

The Future Sound of Nostalgia is available to pre-order from www.thedc3.com.au now.

The Future Sound of Nostalgia?

Remember when smokers weren’t jailed?
Remember when rock bands didn’t sell their naming rights to insurance companies?
Remember when Apple was just a humble multimedia giant?
Remember when death was not-for-profit?
Remember how we thought Lady Gaga was ‘outrageous’?
Remember there was a Sheen guy who had nothing to do with dusting?
Remember when musical genres hadn’t reached six figure proportions?
Remember bookshops?
Remember books?
Remember when you could swear in public?
Remember life before the Andrew Bolt-Islamic Defenders Front-affiliation scandal?
Remember when looking at your own genitals in the shower wasn’t pay-per-view?
Remember when you could read things written by people who were good at writing?
Remember those 3 days when Rupert Murdoch didn’t seem above the law?
Remember when you got some stupid press release with a list of things which you hadn’t started remembering yet, and -

… never mind.

One night you WILL remember:

Spring, 2011. The DC3 came to your city, celebrating The Future Sound of Nostalgia with an epoch-defining performance-art ‘tableau’, leaving the streets and alleyways ringing to the catchcry: “We’re not gonna take it. Unless it’s more fun to take it.”

That night you WILL remember.

You stayed home, and there was this great Masterchef re-run on…

The Future Sound of Nostalgia: the back story

This is their debut album as The DC3, although the three members of The DC3 worked together on Damian Cowell’s solo album “Vs Art”, created for the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA).

The three members of The DC3 got together in the nominally alt-country outfit “ROOT!” for two albums. That project ended, and now they’re back, just the three of them, sans cowboy hats, pseudonyms, or real drummers. Now it’s funky beats, weird sci-fi guitar and a singer who comes on like Nick Cave if he’d stayed in Wangaratta and worked at Blockbuster Video.

To launch The Future Sound of Nostalgia, The DC3 are touring nationally with a show that usually includes installation art, spoken word monologues, and slabs of flat-out disco nonsense.

The tour commences in Melbourne at The Corner Hotel on September 10, where they’ll be joined by special guests including The Bedroom Philosopher, and feature a showcase set by Pinky Beecroft’s Circus of Life, playing some of Machine Gun Fellatio’s biggest hits with a 10 piece band including backup singers, The Nymphs.

Next, the Republic Bar in Hobart on September 17. This is their first Tasmanian show since they debuted at the opening of MONA, the world-acclaimed art museum in Hobart. Pinky Beecroft’s Circus of Life will be accompanying The DC3 here too.

This will be followed by the group’s first visit to Queensland, playing the Beetle Bar in Brisbane on Friday September 30, and the Spotted Cow in Toowoomba on Saturday October 1.

Further dates are yet to be announced.

The Bedroom Philosopher Announces his “Head Sex and Bed Socks” national tour.

The thinking woman’s folk-ruffian, The Bedroom Philosopher is cranking the electric blanket up to ten with his National “Head Sex and Bed Socks” tour. To combat winter he’ll be layering his thermals and his performance with a radical rumpus of wit, song smarts and madcap banter. The only-child over-achiever is Australia’s Rushmore, recently releasing a single, co hosting triple j breakfast, staging a high school assembly, appearing on Spicks & Specks, starting a monthly music column ‘Treble Treble’ for Mess & Noise and presenting for ABC’s Collectors. Oh and he just released a brand new film clip. RAGE made it their ‘Indie Clip Of The Week’ the week before last and you can see it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrUJ_NGipv4

The Head Sex and Bed Socks Tour will see the BP in solo mode, aiming to connect intimately with his fans whilst previewing tracks from forthcoming album ‘Man’ – a series of manthems for the modern day retrosexual. The run of seated venues will ensure a cosy atmosphere, where lyrics can be savoured and pondered.

Sans his Awkwardstra, in solo mode The Bedroom Philosopher is a different beast – more likely to throw a tangent tantrum, showcasing his trademark flair for improvised songs and fuax-diva stunts.

Like snowflakes, no two The Bedroom Philosopher shows are ever the same, catch him (w’ special guest Melbourne singer/songwriter Catboy):

I’m looking for someone who would like to help out at Nibbles Music (based in Fitzroy) for one day a week, starting mid-July and working until September.

This is an opportunity for someone who wants to learn about Music Management, Touring, Online Marketing and Publicity. This is initially a volunteer position but it’s very possible that it will lead into something paid. In the meantime, I can certainly promise some free things (tickets, CDs, T-Shirts).

An interest in The Bedroom Philosopher and The DC3 would certainly be desired.

If you’re interested, please send an email to: anthea@nibblesmusic.com

If you find him funny he’s a comedian, if you don’t find him funny he’s a musician, and if you don’t like his music, he’s a performance artist. The Bedroom Philosopher is a world-class ruffian intellectual with the skills to pay the bills and the abilities to pay his utilities.

Hitting the MICF at the end of this month (full dates below), Wit-Bix is the highly anticipated follow up to The Bedroom Philosopher’s smash hit Songs From The 86 Tram which spawned two sell out MICF seasons (Director’s Choice 2009, Green Room 2010), an ARIA nominated album, JJJ hit ‘Northcote (So Hungover)’ (Hottest 100 2011) and several International awards for the accompanying music video.

Wit-Bix is a blistering new hour of songs and diatribes immortalising everything from lovelorn laptops to Sorry Day fallout and the thrill of cheating on your hairdresser. Over the last fortnight, The Adelaide Fringe Festival have been the first to get a glimpse of the new show, with the Adelaide Advertiser giving it 4 stars:

“HAILING from Tasmania, armed with his trusty guitar, stuffed toy Nicole Squidman and a pair of too-tight cobalt-blue jeans, The Bedroom Philosopher is back in town.

A cross between Tripod and The Flight of the Conchords, Justin Heazlewood’s, pictured, one-man show is most definitely worth the long flight of stairs it takes to get there. His comedy-musical covers everything from Australian politics and state rivalry to an in-depth look at mattress protection.

His clever lyrics and catchy tunes will keep your feet tapping for the entire hour. Whether you like listening to love ballads or good old country-style tunes, his show covers the lot. – 4 stars”

Through national touring with his band The Awkwardstra, regular writing for Frankie magazine and appearances on ABC’s Collectors, The Bedroom Philosopher has used his flaming axe to cleave a niche between the indie music and alternative comedy scenes. While Songs From The 86 Tram proved his abilities as a character actor, Wit-Bix promises to show off his razor sharp stand up, prog-novelty virtuosity and charmingly antagonistic affinity with audiences. It’ll be in a big room too, which is nice as he gets quite hot on stage and his glasses fog up.

Says The Bedroom Philosopher of Wit-Bix:

“Whereas …86 Tram was me losing myself in characters, with Wit-Bix I’ve got nothing to hide behind at all, and I suddenly have a lot to say about society and the country I live in. This is brought to an apex through a John Willamson style ballad that Rip Rip rips the shit out of Australia.”
At the MICF The Bedroom Philosopher will be accompanied by his smoking hot band of hipster slayers ‘The Awkwardstra’, now comprising of double percussion and double trumpet. The band is considered a ‘summer camp’ for the Melbourne indie musicians, who are all taking breaks from dead serious art-rock acts such as The Paradise Motel. This will be the first time Beddy Phil has combined his musical and comedy worlds, ensuring a fuselage of folk-funk fireworks.

Wit-Bix also features a special guest appearance from the voice of Tony Martin, at the helm of mock radio station ‘Triple W’.

“A daggy, sexy and acerbic hurricane of whimsy.” – Sydney Morning Herald.
